Buxton Advertisergate

I got an email this week from the Buxton Advertiser stating that they would no longer print the cricket teams. Another nail in the coffin of village cricket? Or another attempt to kick village cricket into the 21st century by forcing them to publish teams on Facebook, websites etc.

Joe Hall from Buxworth complained, Tim Budd from Buxton reiterated his complaint, but I suspect nothing will happen. The Buxton Advertiser has been moving away from being the local paper for local people for many months. Trying to drum up their interest in a local event is almost impossible. They stopped printing junior football reports ages ago. I believe they are now based in Chesterfield, which says it all. What next? Sorry, there will no longer be reports from the Burbage W.I.?

Years ago, we used to have to write out the teams on a Printexpress printed team sheet, in triplicate. These were posted in the Shepherds Arms, the Mechanics, and on the notice board at Horwich End. In fact, it was brought up at the Executive Committee, and probably voted on, as to whether we could actually stop putting them on the noticeboard at Horwich End. It wouldn't surprise me if the teams for August 1992 fixtures against Chapel are still there.

Anyway, I digress! I've offered Buxworth a page on our website to publish their teams, or they can just put them on our Facebook page. That should start some healthy gossip!

The Under 17s had a disastrous defence of the Compstall Cup as they crashed out in the first round at Dove Holes. Despite some late hitting from Jack Kitchin and Ethan Williams, we were restricted to 71-9. There was some good bowling and fielding, but it was never enough, and Dove won by 5 wickets. We can now concentrate on the league, and next up it is...Dove Holes! An early chance for revenge against Dove who, like Whaley, are unbeaten in the league this season.

Yes you did hear it correctly. Andrew Gibson has asked to not be considered for selection until he has got himself back to fitness. Darren Crompton was quite adamant that Gibbo has not been fit since he was 18, so it could be a long recuperation!
