2nd XI v Compstall (away) Saturday 24th August 2013

It all started so well! We won the toss and Compstall only had ten men. We had no scorer, but neither did they so things were even. They were put in to bat, but as the clock ticked around to 1.30 the skies darkened, and the umpire had still not turned up.

Common sense prevailed and the innings got under way, and it was a good start for our boys as Ethan threw the ball to Colin who removed the bails for a run out. Two overs later and Colin struck again, this time with newcomer Gareth Hill taking the catch. That was the end of the good news for quite some time as the Compstall score rattled along. Eventually Gibbo broke through, with a surprised TR Wild taking a sharp stumping. Gibbo finished with 1 for 37 off 9 overs, but there was a succession of poor fielding as bowlers at the other end struggled. Gareth Hill had 4 overs for 24, Bruce had 2 overs for 19, whilst Ole had 2 overs for 21. Finally, Ethan came good with a wicket clean bowled, and then another as Ole took a good catch in the covers. Ethan's figures of 2 for 19 off 4 were commendable, then Colin and Fid returned. Fid finished wicketless and went for 47 off 12 overs, whilst Colin took his second wicket clean bowled to finish with 2 for 45 off 12. The Compstall total of 221 for 6 was a lot more than we had hoped for, and we needed a solid start.

Unfortunately, Ben Williams retired hurt after a couple of overs, and that brought the father and son combination of the captain and Ole together. Progress was slow and steady, but they took it to 33 before Ole was caught behind for 5. Shortly afterwards, the captain was caught at slip for 29, bringing Ivan and Bruce together. They had a good deal of success, with Bruce eventually falling for 15. Ivan gave TR a few words of wisdom, and TR obviously heeded them as he clipped his first ball for four. He eventually fell for 12 and then Ivan was lbw for a noteworthy 20. Gareth had an almighty swing, reminiscent of Ben Bettney, and was bowled for 0, then Ethan was caught for 4. Gibbo and Colin were left to face one ball, with one run needed for an extra point. Colin swung and missed, Gibbo set off, Coiln didn't. Gibbo got home, Colin set off, and Colin was run out. We finished on 99 for 8, a heavy defeat by anyone's standards, but we should have a much stronger side for the last three matches of the season.
