Whaley Bridge 2nd XI v Buxworth Saturday 14th September 2013

It felt like a game too far at the end of a long season for Whaley Bridge seconds, but at least it was only a short trip to Buxworth. The wet wicket was a batsman's nightmare, and when Buggy won the toss we feared the worst. However, I didn't get where I am today without a bit of gamesmanship, and with the Buggy opener in the running for the league averages I persuaded Pozzer to bat first. Reuben struck early, with a wicket clean bowled, but two difficult dropped catches from Bruce could have been costly. Gibbo got a fortunate lbw decision, then Reuben struck again as Ole Madden took a good catch, and the prospect of a Buxworth batsman winning the averages had gone. Reuben finished with 2 for 27 off 7, and he was involved again as he caught the Buggy captain off Peter Crowley. Gibbo struck twice more, with another lbw and a catch from Ben Williams, whilst Reuben took another catch to give Peter his second victim. Peter had 2 for 9 off 6, whilst Gibbo had 3 for 26 off 12, and it was time to unleash the youth. Ben Stones took 2 wickets clean bowled in his 3 overs for 3, whilst Ole Madden should have had a wicket but Elliot's appeal for a catch behind were turned down. He finished with 2 overs, 0 for 2, whilst Charlie Kitchen was a little wayward in his 2 overs for 15. Harry Bold had 1 over for 7, and it was left to Bruce Glover to finish the innings off with a wicket clean bowled in his 1.4 overs, 1 for 8.

97 all out left the prospect of a very early finish, and the captain decided to umpire rather than bat. This was entirely justified as Elliot and Harry played wonderfully in adding 68 for the first wicket. Elliot was caught for 40, but Harry didn't panic, and it was almost over when he was caught for 35. Ben Williams saw us home with a sturdy, unbeaten 16, whilst Ben Stones was unbeaten on 0. The 8 wicket victory was thoroughly deserved, and lifted the team in to the top half of the table. The last 7 completed games have seen six wins, and if that continues next season.....
