Down At Dove

Whaley Bridge under 13s came down to earth with a bump at high flying Dove Holes. On an unseasonally warm night, Ben Stones and Will McIlveen opened cautiously. Ben was out once but we still ended up positive on 205. Ed Austin and Matt Bingle struggled against the pace of Dove, though Ed did manage a cultured four. They were both out twice, so after two pairs the score was reduced to 193. Alfie Hodges was out three times, and his partner Charlie kitchen once, as Whaley descended to 183, then Ole Madden and Ethan Williams came in to steady the ship. Ole hit three fours, but was caught once and run out, sustaining an injury in the process. Ethan was out once, so after four pairs the score remained on 183. Gareth Preece bludgeoned three fours but was out twice, whilst Bruce Glover was out once to reduce the final total to 182. It would take a monumental effort to turn this one around, and unfortunately there was no monumental effort in sight! Ed and Will bowled tidily as the opening pair scored just 13, but Alfie and Ole were more expensive. They each took a wicket but the score progressed to 239, and things got worse as Matt and Ethan allowed the total to rise to 258. Charlie and Ben each claimed a victim, but the batsmen were now exploiting huge gaps in the field as they moved to 291. Bruce, Ethan and Will finished off the debacle, with no wickets and 32 runs in 4 overs, to take the Dove Holes total to a mammoth 323. Whaley lost by 141 runs, and that may be some sort of a record in this form of cricket. Batting, bowling and fielding will all need to be worked on to recover from this loss in the final two fixtures against Chapel and New Mills.
