It was another cold evening at Horwich Park as the under 13s hosted Hazel Grove. Whaley got off to a good start as Danny Burt (1-10) took a wicket in the first over, but a succession of wides put the visitors in positive figures as the first pair added 13, with Bruce Glover (0-7) providing the ammunition at the other end. Jacob Holland (0-12) and Gareth Preece (0-13) were given just one over each, whilst Alfie Hodges (0-17) sent down two overs as the score moved on to 256. Charlie Kitchen (2-8) and Ole Madden (1-3) reduced the score to 247 after 3 pairs, then Ben Stones (0-8) and Matt Bingle (0-7) allowed the 4th pair just 14 runs. Bruce finished with 0-20 after 1 over against the final pair, whilst Ben Stones had a creditable 0-10 off 3 overs. Charlie completed his spell of 3 overs taking 2 for 12, whilst Ole closed the innings with figures of 1-13 off 3. The fielding had been good, with fine catches from Jacob and Ethan Williams behind the stumps, and though the final total of 290 was a daunting prospect, it was time for tea. The tuck shop did a roaring trade as the lads and their parents sought to stave off the cold with drinks and chocolate bars, then our batsmen started the task of chasing down the mammoth score. It started badly, with Charlie dismissed 4 times, though Ben managed 5 to take us to 192 after 1 pair. Jacob was out once and Matt twice as the score reduced to 185, then Gareth and Danny were out once each, but at least ended up positive as we progressed to 188. Bruce and Alfie adopted an unusually cautious approach which paid off as we moved on to 195, but Ethan was out twice as he and Ole, who joint top scored with 5, reduced the total by 1. We lost by 96 runs against a very strong Hawk Green side, but at least we could take positives out of the bowling and fielding. Man Of The Match Daniel Burt.
