Whaley Bridge v New Mills 13th July 2011

posted 23 Jul 2011, 02:58 by Mike Madden
It should have been a stroll for the under 13s last match of the season, and it certainly started that way. Ben Stones (3 overs 1 for 21) and Bruce Glover (3 overs 1 for 8) restricted the first pair to 204, but Jack Kitchin (2 overs 0-9) and Dan Burt (2 overs 1-11) all owed a little more freedom for the batsman as the score progressed to 213. Ole Madden took a good catch as Ethan (2 overs 1-6) and Alfie Hodges (2 overs 0-13) kept New Mills to 227 after 3 pairs. Ole (2 overs 1-6) and Charlie (2 overs 0-9) regained control as the total went to 238, but Matt Bingle (2 overs 0-8) and the returning Bruce and Ben struggled as New Mills finished on 260. It was more than it should have been, but we were confident with our batting and expected a victory. Ben Stones put in his best batting performance of the season as he and Charlie added 32 to the starting 200, despite Ben being out once. Ole and Ethan were more cautious but still put on 27, then Bruce and Alfie were each out once in taking us to 269. Gareth was also out once, but he and Daniel Burt took us to 294, so we had a lead of 34 with one pair remaining. Two wickets in two balls put the cat amongst the pigeons as Matt and Jack struggled with the New Mills paceman, and they were both out a further time each. The nerves were settled as the batsmen edged a couple of singles, and we eventually finished on 283, giving Whaley a comprehensive 23 run victory. Man Of The Match Bruce Glover.
